For an operative/Engineer to be deemed legally competent to work on any domestic gas appliance they must hold a valid and current certificate of competence for the appliance they will be working on. This can be achieved by undertaking the relevant appliance ACS assessment or an equivalent qualification such as the NVQ Level 2 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or the Level 3 Diploma in Gas Utilisation, Installation and Maintenance.

Course Objectives

To provide knowledge and understanding of the installation, servicing and fault finding requirements for individual appliances.

Who is course aimed at

Appliance training and assessment is open to anyone who currently holds CCN1 Gas Core Safety and wishes to work on any of the above appliances safely & legally.

Entry Requirements / Pre-requisites

Candidates must hold a valid and current CCN1 Gas Core Safety Certificate or the equivalent NVQ Level 2 or Diploma Level 3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance. As of the 1st October 2018 under guidance note 8 version 6 issued by UK Gas, candidates must be Gas Safe Registered for at least 6 months before they can extend their range of certification. It is also a requirement that all candidates undertaking initial Assessment of an appliance require training that must be logged.

Course Content

The course will involve the installation, servicing and fault finding of the chosen domestic gas appliances. Candidates can opt to undertake any of the following appliances:

  • Boilers and Water Heaters
  • Gas Fires
  • Cookers
  • Meters

Training Method

In house theory and practical training


The assessment consists of multiple choice question paper and practical assessment

Course Outcome and Qualification

Successful completion of the assessment will give candidates a certificate of competence to allow them to carry out work on the appliance/s they have been assessed for.

Materials/Equipment Required

As this is an open book assessment, candidates are advised to bring with them a CCN1 Gas Core Safety Manual as well as manuals for the appliances they have chosen for assessment. Viper books can be purchased at our centre at a cost of £50. Candidates should also be equipped with pens, paper and a calculator. All tools and equipment required for the practical assessment are provided at the centre. Candidates are also advised to dress appropriately.
