Introduction

This is a level 3 City & Guilds qualification which has been designed for all new entrants as well as experienced engineers within the gas industry to provide them with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary for a constructive career within the gas industry. This is a licence to practise and will enable you to be on the Gas Safe Register and work in the UK, Isle of Man and Guernsey.

The gas diploma is a QCF (Qualification Credit Framework) qualification and will build upon existing unit credits and count towards progression onto other QCF qualifications.

Who is course aimed at

This course is both ideal for experienced domestic gas engineers looking to enhance their qualifications and for those just starting out in their careers.

Course Duration

To make the course as accessible to learners as possible we offer both full time and part time options.

Full Time: Our full time course runs from our centre in Stevenage and is ideally suited to people who are unemployed. The courses takes place for 5 days per week over 15 weeks and is supported by Job Centre Plus who send us referrals. Part Time: Our part time courses currently run from Watford and take place for 2 days per week over 26 weeks. These courses are ideally suited to people who are working and are looking to change their career path but is also open to anyone who is unemployed. We are also opening up this option at our Stevenage Centre and are currently taking enquiries. What Does the Course Cover?

The course includes the following units:

  • understanding health and safety in gas utilisation
  • understanding scientific principles in gas utilisation
  • understanding combustion and properties of gas
  • understanding buildings, services and structures
  • understanding gas safety.
  • Specific core installation and maintenance
  • Install domestic gas cookers, tumble dryers and leisure appliances
  • Maintain domestic gas cookers, tumble dryers and leisure appliances
  • Install, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm (1 ¼ ) diameter in domestic and small commercial premises
  • Tightness test, purge, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm (1 ¼) diameter in small natural gas installations

Entry Requirements/ Pre-requisites

Although there are no prerequisite qualifications required, the candidate should be able to undertake Mathematics, English and ICT at Level 2. Candidates will undertake a literacy and numeracy assessment as part of the interview process.

Materials/ Equipment Required

Viper Gas Manuals (which are the manuals used for the duration of the course) are essential for the course. They can be purchased from our centre at a cost of £50 or any other reputable supplier. Candidates should also be equipped with pens, paper, ruler, A4 folder X 2 and a calculator. All tools and equipment required for training and practical workshops are provided at the centre. Candidates are also advised to dress appropriately.
